Welcome
The Northwest Indiana Paddlers Association (NWIPA) was formally founded on January 18, 2009 as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the region's paddling resources and opportunities, providing environmental stewardship of the region's waterways, education, and to be a link between the region's paddlers.

Coming Up...

The full board of directors has been confirmed! Check the Organization page to see who will be working to make 2010 a great year for the region’s paddlers.

With the board in place, the next order of business will be to adopt a Bylaws document. Once the Bylaws are in place we’ll be able to apply for our 501c.3 certification which will qualify NWIPA to apply for a wide range of grant programs.

There have been some great suggestions to enhance the usability of the NWIPA web site. The Stewardship Committee now has a page to report on their activities, and for downloading the various forms and waivers for waterway cleanup volunteers. Check out the equipment wish list to see if there are any tools or supplies you can help us out with. Perhaps you know a generous and sympathetic hardware store owner that can help out also. Request letters you can take to potential sponsors and donors are available for download also. Soon to be added are pages for each of the other committees to report on their activities.

Would you like to paddle someplace new, but don’t know where to launch? Lots of others do too so we’d like to host a ‘Places to Paddle’ section where our members can find great new paddling venues. We’ll create a template of basic info so you can share your favorite spot with your fellow members.

Don’t forget to regularly check the Calendar of Events, there will be a lot added for 2010 including events by our partners around the region.

If you have any questions, please email them to Dan at: dplath@nwipa.org.
Thanks again so much for helping to make the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association a huge success so far. Right now, we are well over 200 paddlers strong, and new members are always welcome. We look forward to meeting & hearing from you.

The NWIPA Blueways Stewardship Committee now has it’s own page on this site. There you will find information about current projects, download guideline and volunteer documents, and the all-important ‘Wish List’ of the tools and supplies Gina and her team of volunteers desperately need to clean up our streams.

The Asian Carp Invasion Crisis

The Great Lakes are under attack from an invasive species of carp that threaten to ruin a $7 billion a year economy. Commercial and sport fishing as well as recreational boating industries are at risk. These fish have been detected only miles from Lake Michigan, coming up the Illinois River and the Cal-Sag Canal. Illinois and the Army Corp of Engineers is being sued by the other Great Lakes states to force the closure of shipping locks on these water ways. Read more and sign a petition at these links:
