A Great Race!

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

The dire weather that was forecast stayed away, and perfect morning lake conditions made for a competitive 8-mile Lake Michigan Race. The day was dominated by national champion racer Rob Hartman, closely chased to the finish line by Bill Bellinger, Barry Bowman and Steve Horney. Impressive performances were also turned in by Terry Streib and Matt Conrad in the sea kayak class. In the women’s sea kayak class

Bonnie Jagiella, Erin Argyilan, and Marlene Bertolozzi recorded amazing times as well.

The afternoon race on Trail Creek was again dominated by K1 paddler Rob Hartman, with Matt Conrad and Bonnie Jagiella following with in respectable times, as well as a great showing by Matt and Danielle Meersman in C2.

It was a day for kids too! Olivia Hartman was followed seconds later by sister Chloe, with Jak Krouse hot on their heels.

Although the turnout was light, the competition was strong as the participants put their all into the races.

A special thanks is in order to the volunteers that made the day possible. Gayle MacBride tirelessly kept track of all the details. Kenneth Nesbitt and Mary Jo made sure the kids had a fun and safe day on the water. Sherri Roberts, Terry Pabon, Erin Argyilan, and Andrew wore multiple hats by helping with registration and timing the races. Awesome Maggie Byrne as on-water safety kayaker put my mind at ease; and Kris and Jak Krouse as the safety Zodiak jockeys. As always the amazingly tireless Dan Plath as the mastermind and inspiration behind Ride the Wave Regatta.

We hope to see you in 2012 for the 5th Annual Michigan City Ride the Wave Regatta Canoe & Kayak Race! For more information or sponsorship opportunities, please contact Ken Stelter at
